Obstetrics Q & A

What is obstetrics?

Obstetrics is a medical specialty that focuses on the childbearing cycle, including pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum care. Obstetric care ensures that a woman has the most positive pregnancy and childbirth experience possible because it addresses the health and safety of both mother and baby.

Who provides obstetric care?

Dr. Torres, an expert obstetrician and gynecologist, and her team provide exceptional obstetrics, high-risk pregnancy care, and midwifery services to women of all ages and stages of pregnancy at Suncoast Women’s Care.

What does prenatal care include?

Prenatal care involves monitoring both you and your baby for possible health conditions or complications, addressing any health issues that arise, making sure you have all the information you need to make healthy choices during your pregnancy, and assisting and supporting you during labor, delivery, and the postpartum period.

Obstetric services at Suncoast Women’s Care include:

  • Prenatal and postnatal checkups
  • Blood and urine tests
  • Ultrasounds and other diagnostics
  • Prescribing medications
  • Nutrition, lifestyle and pregnancy education
  • Midwife and/or physician-assisted delivery
  • Labor induction and pain management
  • C-sections and other medical procedures
  • Monitoring hospital stays

Suncoast Women’s Care is run by women, for women, and the team strives to inform women about all their care options, so they feel empowered to make their own choices about their health care.

Why would I choose a midwife for pregnancy care?

A certified nurse-midwife is a highly-trained medical professional who specializes in pregnancy and delivery. Many women choose a midwife because of their intensive training in obstetrics. And women who don’t have serious complications during pregnancy, and would prefer to give birth naturally or with minimal intervention, often choose to use midwives for their pregnancy care.

In addition to delivering babies and general obstetric medical care, services that a midwife can provide include:

  • Assist with creating a birth plan
  • Emotional support during labor
  • Postpartum support
  • Breastfeeding and newborn care education

The skilled team at Suncoast Women’s Care works together to provide personalized care that meets the needs of the individual patient. If you feel more comfortable having a medical doctor deliver your baby, Dr. Torres is available, even if your pregnancy isn’t considered high-risk.
